What is the first thing you do whenever you have something to complain about? Thats right, you post on Twitter. Comcast, a cable service provider in the US discovered that people had started complaining about a service being down hours before anyone actually cared to phone them and tell them about it. Well – we’re geeks, we don’t phone, either we Skype or we Tweet. Taking this into consideration they then started to use Twitter as an extra feature for their customer support; meaning you then have direct access to their support crew. Interresting thought, and why not – give people a service where they are, and they are bound to use it as it’s the easiest way for them. I guess we’ll soon see tons of other similar attempts; personally I believe it’s a nice way to interract with the customers, and one can wonder why it’s not being embraced by more companies already.

BluePont – When privacy means nothing

Most of you already know that I’ve critizised several online solutions as I am thinking more and more people are giving up their privacy using those services. The other day I stumbled upon yet a service that to me falls into the same category. BluePont is a dating service; another one you may ask – though these guys have a new approach to the whole matter. Using GPS technology and your cellphone you’ll automatically be notified that you are near someone that might be of your interrest. Someone said stalkers best friend? Sure, the basic idea is technically thrilling to me, though the mere thought on letting everyone that might be interresting knowing that I am nearby gives me the shivers. This is surely a service for those that doesn’t value their privacy, to me – this is just the kind of service I would believe would be a splendid tool in the arsenal of a stalker.

Trafikkflyt – Traffic information service

I’ve written a small java framework for reading the P4 service Trafikkflyt. That service offers traffic information like for instance that a road is blocked. The framework is quick and easy to use; and with a simple call you can quickly get information like; Title, Link, Latitude and Longitude back. I also made it auto-generate a google maps link. Do keep in mind that this is for Norwegians.

Trafikkflyt – API usage

After speaking briefly with a co-worker earlier today about the service that the radio channel P4 (Norwegian) offers, I decided to make a Java framework that can easily be used to get the information from this service. Shortly told, this service is continously updated with traffic news – roads blocked and other information that is important to people on the road.

The framework works in the manner that you can either get all the current events, or limit it to an area of your choice. The area codes you can use is defined in the source code – and can also be found on the developer page for Trafikkflyt. You find that page by browsing to the bottom of the main page, and click the “For Utviklere” link.

The framework will grab the following fields and create elements for each:

Title of the event
Link to the event (Trafikkflyt)
Published date
Published date (date object)
Published date (formatted)
Latitude
Longitude
Google maps generated link

The source also comes with a test program that can be used to test the output.
