Zen-koding, bli en effektiv kode-ape

Her for en stund siden så kom jeg over noe jeg først avfeide med nok et prosjekt som trolig bare fikk et blaff men som aldri kom til å bli noe særlig av, men på fredag etter jobb så kom tankene tilbake til dette prosjektet og jeg tenkte jeg skulle se hvordan det lå an nå; imponerende er ett ord som da kommer snikende.

Om du er som meg, en kode-ape så vet du allerede at det finnes knapt noe som er så kjedelig som å gjøre det samme, om og om igjen, og ikke minst – det samme som du da trolig allerede har gjort utallige ganger før. Det er her Zen-koding kan hjelpe deg. Her kan man ved å forstå CSS-selector syntaksen utvikle seg selv til å bli langt mer effektiv når det kommer til oppbygning av HTML. Både små seksjoner av HTML så vel som hele sider kan man effektivisere ved å forstå og klare det som er blitt døpt Zen-koding.

Kort fortalt kan du med enkle syntakser bygge opp hele menystrukturer, du kan ved effektiv TAB-bruk flytte deg korrekt mellom de deler av koden du faktisk er interessert i å endre, ved å benytte syntaksen på en god måte kan du raskt og smertefritt gi de unike identifikatorer både ved å hente ut tellerverdier så vel som å benytte seg av løkker som da enkelt genererer de HTML kodene du trenger – og mye, mye mer.

Dette fungerer ved at du laster ned utvidelser til (allerede) en rekke forskjellige programmer. Blant annet så er det full støtte for Visual Studio og Notepad++ til de av dere som også er Windows junkier. Men det finnes en rekke andre editorer, både for Windows, Mac OSX så vel som multi-plattform. Besøk nettsidene til Zen-koding for en komplett oversikt.

NimBuzz – Mobility is the answer

So I stumbled upon a article in TechCrunch covering imo.im, not that interresting to me, but what I did take notice of, was NimBuzz. I got interrested as it could combine my contacts from MSN, Skype, Facebook and others, and then you could quickly and easily reach them through your cellphone. As I have a cellphone with WLAN abilities, that would mean you more or less have free calls at your hand. The installation took just a few minutes, so did the configuration – and before I knew it, I was up and running.

The user interface is quite intuitive and it doesn’t take long to get rather familiar with the way it works. One thing I do suggest though, is to edit the settings so that it will only display the contacts of yours that is online, if not – you’ll have a pretty huge list. Both chatting with your friends, as well as calling them (MSN and Skype at least from what I tested) works without problems. Now, the application is great on a ordinary cellphone, though on iPhone it’s pretty damn nice. Sadly I don’t have a iPhone myself, but a co-worker of mine tested it on his, and I must say I am impressed with how it runs there.

Some of the social networks/applications it supports is: Skype, Windows Live Messenger (MSN), Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, AIM, studiVZ, GoogleTalk, Facebook, MySpace, Jabber – as well as others. Go take a look at it and install it on your phone today, you won’t regret it. There is also a PC applcation for NimBuzz which easily connects your friends from the same range of IM networks.

Abandonware – What did you forget?

For some reason I started to think about some old good programs, like Norton Commander. And as I was bored, I started to look around on the internet to see if that program was still around. It was the program that I used the most, and in my eyes one of the best file managers that was ever made. Sure, in the later years we’ve seen Windows Norton Commander, and Total Commander, but still – none of those manage to give me that old-fuzzy-warm feeling. Well – right – back on track, I found this gem on an Abandonware site named Vetusware. Abandonware is applications and/or games that have been abandoned by the authors and are no longer sold. So if you have a moment, and feel like taking a trip down the memory lane, then visit that site.

The other day I stumbled upon the webpage TypeChart. A brilliant webpage for those of us that works in design and typesetting. Here you can quickly and easily check how different fonts works against eachother, on both Windows and MacOSX platform. It covers a variety of features, and you can easily and quickly change between fonts, fontsizes and emphasis. And when you’re all done, you can then quickly have the CSS code generated for you for usage in your designs.
